The Malco Theatres was founded by M.A. Lightman, Sr. in 1915. It is a family-owned business, which started in Sheffield, Alabama, moved to Nashville, Tennessee, then went on to Little Rock, Arkansas.
In 1929, the business that was once known as Arkansas Amusement Enterprises officially rebranded itself as Malco Theatres, Inc. It began acquiring and renovating several movie theaters in the states of Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Missouri.
In the 1930s, Malco Theatres, Inc. moved its operations to Memphis. Large movie palaces were opened between 1935 and1951 in the Memphis area, and many people flocked to these places. This helped the company grow and become more successful.
Most cinemas had only been of the one screen variety in 1970. However, Malco Theatres went on to build its first 4-screen theaters, then an 8-screen multiplex theater. These older theaters are now mostly closed, but the newer ones continue the success of the multiplex theaters.
