History
Harkins Theaters was founded in the year 1931, when its founder Dwight Harkins failed his acting career and decided to run a theater instead. The first theater he established didn’t succeed, but the second theater eventually became a hit during that time in the 1940s.
Because of its reasonable movie ticket prices, Harkins Theaters gained a huge following, which inspired the company to expand its theater branches to more states.
Harkins also hosts different film festivals every year to show support for independent and art films – the DeadCENTER Film Festival in Oklahoma and the Phoenix Film Festival in Scottsdale, Arizona, to name a few.
Harkins also proved its superiority in film showing when it received awards like The Arizona Culture Keepers Award in 2010, the coveted United Motion Pictures Association of American National Showman of the Year Award in 1976, 1980, and in 1982 and the Phoenix Film Festival Visionary Award in 2010.
Harkins Review
During its early years, Harkins Theaters innovated the “glow-in-the-dark” carpet, which served as an aid for viewers to find their seats despite the dark cinema setting.
It also innovated automated drinking fountains and headsets for hearing impaired viewers, which were considered impressive feats in a year when modern technology was not yet a thing.
Not to be left out of the competition, Harkins Theatres offered a better movie-viewing experience by upgrading over 400 of its standard screens to digital projection during the year 2011.
In addition to its improved screens, the theater now boasts of several amenities that include reclining seats with lifting armrests.
It was also in the same year when the company introduced play centers for children, which allowed parents to enjoy the movie while their children are in a well-supervised facility.
As for the theaters’ concession options, viewers can enjoy the standard movie theater food including popcorn, pretzels, nachos and pizza, with prices ranging from $4.00 to $7.00.
About
Focused on its goal of keeping its loyal movie goers and attracting new ones as well, the company offers various ways to reduce the ticket cost.
Aside from the usual student and senior citizen discount, the company also offers discounted ticket deals for corporations, schools and others who usually purchase tickets in bulk.
The theaters also offer a variety of merchandises for its loyal customers. Loyalty cups and loyalty T-shirts are made available each year, with cool designs adapted from different movie-related themes. Viewers who avail of their loyalty cup merchandise have the option to bring it back and get $1.50 worth of refills for the year. For those who purchase their loyalty T-shirt, they can wear it on any day of the year and have it shown to the staff and in exchange, they receive a free medium-sized popcorn. A part of the proceeds for these merchandises are donated to the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
Aside from its financial donations, the company also gives back to the community by hosting Summer Movie Fun, a summer movie activity specially created for children. The activity features ten different children movies that were aired from the previous year. Now on its 30th year, Harkins established the program to offer parents a cheap but fun alternative activity for their kids every summer.
