History
Founded in 1985 by Lee Roy Mitchell, the vision for the theater company was to bring the art of modern movie theater entertainment to all undeserved markets in America.
Mr. Mitchell envisioned a world where watching movies was open to all so that movie-enthusiasts from diverse communities can be given a decent and unforgettable movie-watching experience. He wanted to diversify the reach of the movie theater industry, which he was successful on doing in the latter years of the business.
In 1993, Mr. Mitchell, expanded outside the U.S. and decided to tap the South American market, expanding the company to one of the fastest growing markets there—Brazil. After years of expansion, Cinemark to this day is, according to Mr. Mitchell, the most geographically diverse exhibitor in South America.
Years of dedication and hard work paid off as Cinemark successfully earned the title of third largest movie theater chain in America, and second in the world. Despite its great success, Cinemark continues to be humble by prioritizing its people over profit and by respecting all the local communities and countries in which they operate their business in.

Cinemark diversifies its offers and services to cater to a diverse community. It is a company that works closely with different organizations to serve its audience better. One of Cinemark’s efforts is to collaborate with the California Council of the Blind (CCB) in which they aim to bring the audio description narration technology into its theaters for the benefit of customers with vision disabilities.
This audio description technology features an audio narrator providing the viewers with vivid descriptions of the movie’s scenery, actors’ facial expressions, costumes, scene changes, etc. In short, all visual elements are described in a form of movie narration for viewers with vision disabilities. This narration is then seamlessly integrated into the movie’s soundtrack to give all viewers a pleasurable movie experience.
