History

Empire Cinemas originally opened with the name Empire Theatre in the year 1884 at Leicester Square. It was then a West End Variety Theatre, which was a layout by Thomas Verity.

In 2005, Empire Cinemas Limited was created, after it purchased the deprived theaters from Cineworld and Odeon Cinemas. It took six cinemas from Cineworld and another eleven from Odeon by the order of the Office of Fair Trading. After the acquisition, Empire Cinemas Limited merged them as Empire Cinemas.

Due to Empire’s continuous innovations, it released its first ever IMAX theater on May of 2014 at the Leicester Square Cinema.

In July of 2016, Cineworld bought Empire’s five cinemas, as well as the Leicester Square, for an amount of £94 million. On August 12, 2016, Cineworld became the new owner of Empire Cinemas.
