History

Muvico Theaters Inc. was owned by a private company called Amco Entertainment LLC before it was purchased by the Carmike Cinemas for $38.1 million in November 4, 2013.

The company was established in 1984 when they bought the Movie Center 3 Theater in Florida. By then they continued to buy and built eight more theaters from 1985 to 1995. But because of the tough competition in the theater industry, Muvico decided to sell five and leased three of its theaters just to keep up with other companies like AMC Regal and Carmike Theatres. Later in 1996 Muvico bought another 5 cinemas again from United Artist Theatres in Central and South Florida.

It was then in 1998 that the very first megaplex-themed theater of Muvico was built. Its theme was “book of dreams”, and was named Pointe 21 in Orlando. After that, Muvico continued to build theme-inspired theaters, including a 50s drive theme with 18 Screen Theaters and an Egyptian theme in Pompano Beach and Davie, Florida. Muvico continued to expand and built four more megaplexes in Florida and one in Maryland in 2000. When the movie Spiderman 3 was launched in the year 2007, Muvico opened an IMAX in Baywalk 20 theatre and since then it’s been said that it boosted the appeal of Baywalk plaza in St. Petersburg.

But Muvico didn’t stay stable long enough. Pointe Orlando 21 was sold to Regal Cinemas while Paradise 24, Palace 20 and Boynton Beach 14 in Florida was bought by Cinemark in March 2009. And finally, as of 2013, the Georgia-based Carmike Cinemas completed the deal to acquire Muvico Entertainment. At the purchase, the CEO of Carmike Cinemas praised Muvico for being an industry pioneer and technology leader.
